Why the Broermann Medical Innovation Award is represented by a medal

When it came time to choose a physical symbol for the Broermann Medical Innovation Award (BMIA), we explored several ideas — a trophy, a cup, or a medal.
After much thought and discussion, we decided on a gilded medal with a representative diameter, housed in a classic dark case.
But why a medal? What makes it the right symbol for everything the BMIA stands for?

A timeless mark of achievement

Medals have always stood for excellence, courage, and achievement that lasts. They celebrate work that goes beyond one moment in time — just like the BMIA, which honors research that truly changes medical care and improves lives.

Built to last

Money can be spent, and trophies can date with time — but a medal endures. It can be treasured, displayed, and even passed on. That permanence reflects our mission: to honor medical innovations that make a lasting difference for patients today and for generations to come.

Rooted in tradition

Since the 19th century, medals have been the classic way to recognize groundbreaking contributions in science, culture, and society. With this award, we’re continuing that proud tradition — celebrating excellence that advances human knowledge and well-being.

A universal symbol

No matter where you go in the world, a medal instantly says “achievement.” It needs no translation. That universality reflects the spirit of the BMIA — an international award that connects and honors the global community of medical innovators.
